Quabbin Reservoir - Bird Watching & Hiking

Join the Allen Bird Club of Springfield and Sierra Club Massachusetts on a bird watching field trip in the Quabbin Reservoir Park. This will include bird identification, songs, and behavior for resident and migratory birds in the Quabbin watershed. Afterwards, the chapter will lead a 4 mile spring hike in the watershed northern hardwood forest with an opportunity to view flora and fauna and some exceptional views of the Quabbin Reservoir. Prior to the hike, we will be briefly discussing the Quabbin Reservoir, its history, the watershed public lands, their benefits, climate action, and the chapters watershed forest campaign. Join the Allen Bird Club of Springfield and Sierra Club Massachusetts on a bird watching field trip in the Quabbin Reservoir Park. The bird club will guide the group during the trip and share their birding expertise. Participants will have the opportunity to do bird identification, listen to bird songs and calls, and observe behavior for resident and migratory birds in the Quabbin watershed. This is open for novices as well as experienced birders.

Afterwards, the chapter will lead a 4 mile spring hike in the watershed hardwood forest where we will view flora and fauna and catch some exceptional overlooks of the Quabbin Reservoir.   Prior to the hike, we will be briefly discussing the Quabbin Reservoir, its history, the watershed public lands, their benefits, climate action, and the chapters watershed forest campaign. Please note the bird watching will be from 7:30a - 9:30a and the hike from 10a - 2p.

Participants can join the bird field trip, the hike, or both. See the sign-up instructions for more details.

Cost: Free

Signup Instructions: Please select your registration option (bird field trip, hike, or both) at the time of sign-up. The outing is open to adults and children (10 years and up) accompanied by a parent. Details about the birding field trip, hiking route, etc., will be provided by email to those who register. Participants are to be in good health and physical shape to experience birding field trip and hike.

Bring: A list of what to bring will be provided to those who register.

Signup Restrictions: There is a cap of 20 participants for the bird watching and hike. Registration will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Additional Directions: Participants are responsible for transportation to/from the outing site.

Carpool: Carpooling can be coordinated separately. More information on carpooling to follow for those who register.

Note: Carpool transportation is at the sole risk of the participants.
