Join us for a guided hike along the Rock Quarry Trail at Rockwoods Reservation. This scenic 2.2-mile loop offers a wonderful opportunity to experience shaded woodland habitat, impressive rock formations, and the unique ecosystems that make Rockwoods such a special place. Along the route, we will stop at several locations to discuss the natural communities and ecological features we encounter while exploring the trail.

The Rock Quarry Trail gains approximately 246 feet of elevation and is rated Moderate. The trail surface is primarily crushed gravel and includes several steeper sections and stairways. Participants should be prepared for uneven terrain and moderate exertion. The plentiful shade and striking geological features make this a rewarding early summer hike.

We anticipate the hike taking approximately 1.5 hours, including educational and interpretive stops. Please park in front of the Rockwoods Visitor Center (38.566261,-90.668819) and assemble directly in front of the building at or before 9:30 AM.  Leader will be driving a 2009 White Toyota Sienna.

For those who would like to stay after the hike, we will also visit and discuss the Rockwoods Deer Resistant Demonstration Garden. Participants interested in learning more about the garden and deer-resistant native landscaping can review the Rockwoods deer-resistant quadfold.

A restroom is available on the right-hand side of the road (38.563966,-90.665587) as you approach the Visitor Center. Since restroom facilities are not located at our meeting location, participants are encouraged to plan accordingly before arriving.

Please bring water for the hike and any desired snacks. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy walking or hiking shoes. Hiking poles may be helpful on steeper portions of the trail. Most of the route is well shaded, making for a comfortable hike even in warmer weather.

Participation is limited to 12 hikers, and registration closes on June 4, 2026. Please RSVP through the EMG Sierra Club website if you plan to attend.

All participants must sign a Sierra Club waiver, which can be completed online prior to the outing. A $1 per person Sierra Club donation is requested. Guns are prohibited. Pets are not permitted on this outing.
