Alternatives to Herbicides
The Sierra Club strongly opposes the use of glyphosate-based herbicides like Roundup in or around creek waters and watersheds. They advocate for utilizing non-chemical, mechanical, and manual restoration techniques, citing severe risks to both human health and local aquatic ecosystems.

Protecting sensitive watersheds and prioritizing non-toxic alternatives to herbicides have been the mission of the OC Creek team. Although officials have paused herbicide spraying locally, it was only after months of pressure from a grassroots Instagram campaign. With growing public concern over the chemical use in flood-controlled channels, reducing chemical spraying in areas where we run, surf, swim and walk has only begun. A long-term plan can help preserve rare riparian habitats which support birds, fish and other wildlife in and around waterways as they flow toward the coast.
