Join us on a community hike to Stack Rock! This out-and-back day hike features the Stack Rock, a prominent landmark near Bogus Basin, with beautiful views of the Treasure Valley along the way. We'll share lunch together at the top, and our Outings leaders will also share information about how you can advocate for our Roadless Forest areas.

Park at the Freddy's Stack Rock Trail head on Bogus Basin Road. Carpooling is encouraged and an email will be sent out to those interested in carpooling the week of the event. Expect to hike approximately 11.5 total miles, with 1,325ft of elevation gain. Plan accordingly for an afternoon on the trail with a light day pack for water, snacks, and layers accordingly with weather.

What to expect:
  • Meet at 9:00am at trailhead for pre-hike safety talk, introductions, and to hand out lunches
  • Begin hike at 9:15 a.m., taking stops along the way to take in the views and catch a breather.
  • Return to trailhead by 3pm for sign out

Trail, safety, and accessibility info
The trail is a more challenging route than most of our Sierra Club hikes, a total of 11.5 total miles, with 1,325ft of elevation gain. The trail starts with a steady descent for about 5 miles, before picking up in moderately steep elevation to reach stack rock at approx. 6.4 miles, before returning back downhill for about a mile and then having a steady incline to return to the car.

We recommend you have experience with longer day hikes (8+ miles with elevation gain over 1000ft) to go on this trip. To complete the hike on-time, we will aim to go no slower than 2 miles/hour.

We will stop to eat lunch at Stack Rock. Folks will be able to do small-scale adventuring on the rocks, but because we do not have safety equipment, we cannot do any climbing per Sierra Club safety policies.

You can find more information about the hike area here, and/or reach out to our Outings Leader Wyatt if you have any other questions about accessibility or what to expect on the trail.

Safety:
Our trip leaders will carry a full first aid kit along with extra water. We will be making a few stops along the way as needed to regroup, and to take photos. Trip leaders will be at the front and back of the group, communicating along the way to ensure all is well and that the group isn't too spread out.

Food
Lunch is on us! Please let us know your dietary restrictions in your RSVP if you would like us to provide a meal.

Other considerations:

Kids & families are welcome! All minors must be accompanied by a guardian.

Dogs are welcome, as long as they are well-behaved, comfortable around large groups of people and other dogs, and remain leashed at all times. Please also bring extra water for your dog, as temperatures can be warm and there is limited shade along portions of the trail.

Please fill out a separate registration form for each person, so we can have a signed waiver on file for each person.

We expect everyone joining this event to act respectfully and help create a safe and inclusive space for folks from marginalized identity groups.  All participants must adhere to the standards of conduct in our Participant Agreement

Level: Strenuous

Cancellation Policy: Leaders will check weather conditions the morning of the event. If the weather is considered unsafe, we will postpone the trip to a later date and communicate the new plans with all participants. If you need to cancel, please do so ASAP by emailing amanda.reed@sierraclub.org or a trip leader. Cancelling within 24 hours or not showing up to the event makes it hard for another participant to take your spot, and wastes money for your supplies cost (which as a nonprofit, isn't sustainable). If you no-show or cancel within 24 hours two times, you will not be allowed to sign up for trips for the following three months. Thanks for understanding!
