Earth Day: Learn and Play - Croatan Group

11:00am – 11:45am - “Wind Energy in NC”
Presented by: Karly Lohan, Senior Carolinas Program Manager for South Eastern Wind Coalition. She will discuss wind energy in NC and update the audience on the latest actions being taken for offshore wind energy development and the success stories of onshore wind energy in Coastal NC. Q&A to follow.

12:00 – 12:45pm - “Rooftop solar 101”
Representatives from Cape Fear Solar and Southern Energy Management will discuss what you need to know and the questions you need to ask before signing a contract for solar panels (and battery storage) at your home. This is a rapidly changing field with many facets: panel technology, inverter technology, battery technology, local utility issues, and the political climate for incentives. The discussion will be moderated by Joel Dunn of Emerald Isle, who has had rooftop solar since 2018, Joel is also the Chair of the Croatan Group of the Sierra Club, and a member of the State Sierra Club chapter executive committee.

1:00pm – 1:45pm - “Solar Users Experiences”
We will have a group of several Carteret County homeowners who have rooftop solar energy. We will have homeowners who are on Carteret Craven Electric Membership Corporation as well as Duke Energy. They will talk about costs and benefits, and what they wish they'd known before they started the journey. This panel will be moderated by Joel Dunn of Emerald Isle, who has had rooftop solar since 2018, Joel is also the Chair of the Croatan Group of the Sierra Club, and a member of the State Sierra Club chapter executive committee.

2:00 – 2:45pm - “Training the workforce of Tomorrow”
Presented by: VP Perry Harker, Carteret Community College. Review of the Curriculum and Workforce and Continuing Education classes that focus around renewable energy and workforce opportunities.
