SC Angeles Book Club: Toxic Communities: Environmental Racism, Industrial Pollut

Join us for the second staff-led book club of the year. Everyone is welcomed and invited to this FREE community event. The Sierra Club Angeles Chapter staff has committed to organizing this book club that focuses on themes centered on Environmental Social Justice. Our second featured book is Toxic Communities: Environmental Racism, Industrial Pollution, and Residential Mobility by Dorceta Taylor and set for Wednesday, June 2nd from 6:30-8:00 pm. There are a lot of injustices our communities of color have experienced in the past (and recent) history and this past year has been no exception. The pandemic has further exposed many of the public health and environmental injustices and disparities that continue to exist in our communities. As staff, we decided to choose Toxic Communities by Dorceta Taylor to contribute to our ongoing learning around the class and racially motivated disparities, inequities, and discrimination in our institutions of government. This book will help us a clear understanding of the long histories of racial segregation and housing discrimination. Let us continue to learn and explore Toxic Communities, the study of race, the environment, and current events. Join us as we dive into this informative and comprehensive book to explore what we can do as environmental justice advocates of our most at-risk communities.Dorceta Taylor is a renowned environmental sociologist who focuses on the locations of hazardous facilities in low-income and minority communities and shows how they have been dumped on, contaminated and exposed. The author draws on an array of historical and contemporary case studies from across the country. Taylor explores controversies over racially-motivated decisions in zoning laws, eminent domain, government regulation (or lack thereof ), and urban renewal. She provides a comprehensive overview of the debate over whether or not there is a link between environmental transgressions and discrimination, drawing a clear picture of the state of the environmental justice field today and where it is going. In doing so, she introduces new concepts and theories for understanding environmental racism that will be essential for environmental justice scholars. A fascinating landmark study, Toxic Communities greatly contributes to the study of race, the environment, and space in the contemporary United States.
