Water wearing through Paleozoic rock strata has left multicolored formations in the Quebradas, across the Rio Grande from Socorro. We’ll walk 3.5 mi up the arroyo with only 240’ elevation gain but a few million years of geological time, at which point (teaser coming) we’ll decide whether to continue to a remarkable feature just 1.4 mi farther. Ages 14 and up, no dogs. Exit I-25 at Escondida (first exit N of Socorro) and drive E and then N following the paved road 1.5 miles to the turnoff E to Escondida Lake, where we’ll meet in the parking lot at 9 AM and possibly share rides.
For reference, the full route goes: continue across the river and follow the paved road right (S) 1 mile to the Quebradas Backcountry Byway sign, turn left, and drive 12.2 miles to Stop 7 on the Quebradas geology tour, a fine guide to which is found at https://geoinfo.nmt.edu/publications/guides/quebradas/.
