➤ Date/Time: Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, November 27th, 2024 (10:00 AM - 3:00 PM)➤ Hike Description: Join the San Mateo Hiking Group for a scenic exploration along the reservoir shoreline and foothills of Calero County Park on a moderate (2A) 8.61-mile loop with an elevation gain of 858 feet. Our route winds through a diverse landscape, including oak woodlands, chaparral shrublands, and along the eastern shoreline of Calero Reservoir. We will take a lunch break along the Lisa Killough Trail. The trail is named in honor of Lisa Killough's extensive contributions to environmental stewardship.Calero County Park is a prime spot for observing wildlife. Coyotes, deer, and bobcats are frequently seen, while the skies are often patrolled by Canada geese, red-tailed hawks and turkey vultures. Our hike takes place in Calero County Park, a 4,471-acre natural area in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The land where the park and reservoir now stand was historically inhabited by the Tamyen Ohlone people before the arrival of European settlers. Today, the park protects a diverse landscape of oak woodlands, serpentine grasslands, and chaparral while offering opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and other outdoor activities. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we invite you to join us after the hike for a festive tailgate potluck gathering at the picnic area adjacent to the parking lot.
