Raven Rock Trail and Suspension Bridge
Saturday, March 2, 2024

Meet at Caesars Head State Park at 10:00AM. We will carpool 1 mile from the parking lot to the Raven Cliff Falls Trailhead.
The 400-foot waterfall of Matthews Creek is one of the most scenic and photographed waterfalls in SC. It was named for the ravens that breed in the high cliffs forming the falls. Over 150 species of ravens have been identified in this region.
Matthews Creek plunges off Raven Cliff Mountain at the Blue Ridge Escarpment near Caesars Head. The escarpment is where the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian chain) drop abruptly 2,000 feet to the Piedmont below. The sudden drop is why there are so many falls in the area.
We will hike 1.6 miles on Raven Cliff Falls trail to the pavilion overlooking the waterfall.
We will then backtrack about a mile to take the Gum Gap Trail to the Naturaland Trust Trail, dropping constantly in elevation to the suspension bridge. Just before the bridge, the trail follows closely along Matthews Creek with a few side trails to explore around smaller falls and cascades
The suspension bridge over Raven Cliff Falls gives another view to the opposite side of the gorge. We will have lunch by the bridge and then turn around to hike back the way we came in.
This length of this hike will be 7.6 miles and is rated Moderately Strenuous.
Please bring water, lunch and snacks. Wear clothes comfortable for the weather and good hiking shoes. A hiking pole or two are recommended also. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
