Wilderness First Aid Workshop

This Wilderness First Aid workshop builds on eight hours of online instruction with a day of hands-on experience in backcountry techniques to address injuries, illness, and medical conditions in wild places that are typically an hour or more from a trailhead. How do you assess whether a scene is safe or not? Do you treat the person and attempt to keep people in a backcountry situation or do you seek help to evacuate a victim immediately?

The Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club is working to re-start our outings program at the state level. To help identify aspiring trip leaders, we are sponsoring a Wilderness First Aid (WFA) workshop on Sunday, May 5th in Portland, Oregon at the Chapter Office. The day long, in-person workshop leads to Wilderness First Aid certification. An online training module is required prior to the in-person workshop – it takes most people eight hours for the online training and another eight for the hands-on work.

Wilderness First Aid is a comprehensive and systematic curriculum established to standards set by the Wilderness Medical Society. It is designed to help equip first-responders to manage accidents, illness, and potential medical conditions when you are an hour or more from a trail head or boating launch/landing site. This training does not include CPR or provide skills in the use of AED units, focusing instead on ailments and conditions commonly seen in remote outdoor settings where all you have is a first aid kit. The Juniper Group of the Sierra Club is now identified as an Education Center associated with Base Medical, a wilderness medicine company providing participants in the Wilderness First Aid course with certification if a person meets all pertinent requirements.

The in-person workshop is intensive with about eight hours of training along with a lunch break midway through the day which begins at 8:00am and ends about 5:00pm. A person seeking this certification needs to be physically capable of helping with rolling over a “pretend victim” and helping a group safely lift a participant serving as a practice victim. Anyone needing assistance with a disability should contact the course instructor to make arrangements. Scenarios will be accomplished outdoors in park settings where we may experience rain, hail, or sunshine. Some instruction occurs in the Chapter office.

The course fee is $120 and there is space for ten people to participate in this workshop. These workshops typically cost $175 to $250 for this certification. Additionally, for those interested in committing to lead volunteer trips for the Sierra Club, an generous subsidy is provided on a space available basis. Contact the workshop organizer for more information. Financial arrangements to gain access to the online materials will be organized in a separate email or phone call once you have signed up.

Sierra Club membership information is available here.

Successful accomplishment of the workshop assessments will result in obtaining a two year Wilderness First Aid certification. Participants in the day long Portland workshop must complete the online coursework before participating on March, 5th.
