Please join your Potomac Riverkeeper, Dean Naujoks, and Prince William County Supervisor Andrea Bailey for a Town Hall discussion on a proposed coal ash landfill at Possum Point Power Station. This community town hall is being hosted and organized by Potomac District Supervisor Andrea Bailey.
Dominion Power is responsible for the cleanup of 4.5 million tons of coal ash, the waste product from decades of coal burning, at the site of its former coal-fired power station at Possum Point. To comply with Virginia legislation which passed in 2019, Dominion must dispose of or recycle their coal ash pollution at Possum Point and three other sites in Virginia by 2032. Dominion appears intent on moving forward with its plan to build a $347 million double-lined coal ash landfill on the site, while failing to address legacy contamination from its unlined ponds which continues to pollute the site and the Potomac River.
Dominion sent a letter to the county on March 7 to request a determination if the new dump would require a review to proceed. We need to ensure that this landfill is subject to thorough input from the public, as well as from the Possum Point Coal Ash Task Force, which Supervisor Bailey leads.
We are asking that Dominion’s Possum Point Coal Ash Landfill be subject to the same public facility review by the Prince William County local government to which similar facilities would be subject. We are also asking that the Possum Point Coal Ash Task Force be convened to provide Dominion recommendations. Input on this proposal by task force, public, and local government are critical. Please join us for an important discussion!
Before the meeting, you can take action now to send an email to Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairperson Ann Wheeler and Potomoac District Supervisor Andrea Bailey asking them to support a plan to remove Dominion's coal ash.
