Join us for a day hike into Mount Baker Wilderness on the Chain Lakes Loop trail. September marks the 60-year anniversary of the US Wilderness Act, and in honor of this occasion we're visiting one of Washington's most celebrated Wilderness Areas. This trail is rated as moderately challenging by All Trails, and involves an elevation gain of about 1,800 feet over 6.2 miles. The stunning views along the way make the trek well worth the effort!

Early fall is a wonderful time to visit this part of Mount Baker Wilderness, as summer temperatures cool and alpine shrubs take on their autumn colors. We will make plenty of stops to admire the scenery and any interesting plants and animals we encounter. We'll also pause for a conversation about the important, sometimes complicated history of the Wilderness Act and how perceptions of it have evolved over time.

Be sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, a packed lunch and plenty of water for this hike. There is a bathroom at the trailhead, but no guaranteed potable water and on the trail we will have to pack out any waste. We'll be following Leave No Trace principles.

If parking by the trailhead is full, there are multiple spillover areas along the road up to Artist Point. If folks are interested in organizing a carpool, the Sunset Square Safeway parking lot is an option. Please note you will need a Northwest Forest Pass or equivalent public lands pass to park at the trailhead.

While we expect to go ahead rain or shine, severe inclement weather, wildfire smoke, or road closures would cause us to have to cancel. You can find recent trail reports and updates about trail conditions on All Trails.

Although 3pm is the estimated finish time, we could finish slightly earlier or later--so best not to make plans that depend on being done at exactly that time. All hike participants will be required to sign a liability waiver and fill out a medical form.
