Join Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere, The Walden Woods Project, and Sierra Club MA Chapter on a walk & talk around gorgeous Walden Pond!
Walkers will gather at The Walden Woods Project for a brief introduction about the organization, Walden Pond, and the importance of the campaign to Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere.
We will then walk to Walden Pond, via The WWP campus, on Pine Hill trails. We will walk around Walden, stopping at various significant sites to discuss the natural history of Walden Woods, Henry David Thoreau’s legacy, as well as the proposed private jet expansion at nearby Massport-owned Hanscom Field airport (not Hanscom Air Force Base), which now endangers the area. In total, the walk will be about 3 miles (with around 300ft-400ft elevation gain & loss). Bring a bagged lunch or snack to have at Walden when the walk is complete!
On May 1, 2024, the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated Walden Pond/Woods, Minute Man National Historical Park and nearby landmarks as one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places due to the proposed expansion at Hanscom Field. The proposed expansion would add around 6,000 private jet take-offs and landings a year, producing about 150,000 additional tons of CO2e annually.Check out this video about Walden Pond on CBS Sunday Morning!
