Trail Maintenance Makawao Forest

Volunteers will assist with trail clearing, erosion control, and maintenance tasks to keep our trails safe and enjoyable for all. No prior experience is necessary, just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to get your hands dirty. All tools and supplies will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and wear sunscreen. Meet us at the main trailhead parking area. Kahakapao Crew Trail Maintenance Day

Join us for a rewarding day of trail maintenance in the beautiful Kahakapao Forest Reserve in Makawao! The Kahakapao Crew will be working to preserve and improve the trails that wind through this lush forest, ensuring they remain accessible, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

Event Details:

  • Date: December 7th, 2024
  • Time: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM (arrive between 8:45-9:00 AM)
  • Location: Kahakapao Forest Reserve, Makawao

What We’ll Be Doing:

Our focus for the day will be improving the trail’s slope and widening the path. Volunteers will help with tasks such as excavating trail sidesremoving excess dirt, and clearing overgrowth to ensure the trail is safe and accessible. Tools like McLeods and Pulaskis will be provided, and volunteers will be trained on how to use them safely. This is a hands-on opportunity to help mālama ‘āina (care for the land) and contribute to the long-term sustainability of our natural areas.

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy, closed-toe boots
  • Water bottle to stay hydrated
  • Protective clothing (long sleeves, hat, bug spray, sunscreen)
  • Work gloves if you have them (we’ll also provide some)

What We’ll Provide:

  • All necessary tools (McLeods, Pulaskis, etc.)
  • Protective gloves
  • A light lunch after the work is done

Why Participate?

Trail maintenance plays a vital role in preserving our forest ecosystems. By helping with this project, you’re contributing to the long-term health and accessibility of the trails in Kahakapao Forest. It’s also a great way to get outside, meet new people, and give back to the community!
