Beautiful hiking in the heart of the San Fernando Valley! The Westridge/Canyonback Trail provides stunning views of the Santa Monica and San Fernando Valley canyons and beyond. This version of our hike is approximately 4.5 miles with 866’ of elevation gain. From our starting point at the Canyonback Trailhead, we'll be on single track trail heading southeast along a high ridge above Mandeville Canyon. When it intersects with Hollyhock Fire Road, we'll go down into Mandeville Canyon Road, head north along the road 1 block to Garden Lane where we pick up the West Mandeville Fire Road and start the elevation back up long the west side of the canyon to the Nike Radar site stop San Vincente Mountain. With restrooms and shaded lunch area here, we'll enjoy our break and views on both sides of this peak. Walking back to the trailhead is a shorter 1.5 miles along the dirt Mulholland Road with views of the San Fernando Valley. Bring at least two liters of water, snacks, hiking boots, poles if you use them, hat, sunscreen. This is a “front country” event and will take about three hours. Rain / showers / wildfires will cancel.

Directions: From Westside, take 405 fwy north to Mulholland Drive (exit 61), west, drive 2 miles to end of pavement at Encino Hills Drive to the trailhead. Continue about 100 yards to park, facing the yellow posts. From the San Fernando Valley, Ventura Blvd. in Encino take Hayvenhurst Ave south about 1.8 miles, turn right (west) on Encino Hills Drive and continue about 1 mile to beginning of dirt Mulholland Dr. to trailhead. There are approximately 10 parking spots and more along the fence. Feel free to park on Mulholland. There are no bathrooms at trailhead, but there are at Nike Radar Site. Meet at the trailhead at 8 a.m. – this hike warms up, is poplar for the various trails, and parking goes fast.
