Saturday, Nov 16, 2023: Avalanche Beacon Practice at the beach
John Langbein
For this short outing, we will be practicing the use of avalanche transceivers or beacons by burying a transmitting unit in the sand at the beach, then having participants using their own beacons to locate the buried beacon.  Various scenarios will be practiced including the group searching for multiple, buried beacons.

To participate, meet at Pescadero State Beach NORTH at 10:00 a.m. Bring money for parking at the beach; it is a State Park. Bring your beacon (and a robust plastic bag to protect the buried beacon from the sand) and a shovel. Don't worry if you don't have a beacon as others usually bring spares to share. In addition, we'll provide some instruction on avalanche safety and search procedures. The session should last until about 1PM. Bring lunch to eat after the practice.
Directions:  From RT 280 and RT 84 (Woodside RD), west on RT 84 for approximately 20 miles.  South on RT 1 for 3.6 miles (if you cross the Pescadero marsh (a longish bridge that, as of early October 2024), you’ve gone too far.)
