I: San Ysidro Mountain (6147') - Join us for a challenging and sometimes brushy little hike in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to a peak named after a 7th century Spanish saint. Which Saint Isidore (there are ten)? It is most widely believed to be for Isidorus Hispalensis, Bishop of Seville, (ca.560-636), encyclopedist, theologian, author of Etyymologiæ; (the standard Medieval glossary of the seven liberal arts) and many other works, he is the patron Saint of Farming, and the last of the Western Latin Fathers. He thoroughly reorganized the Spanish Church during the fourth Council of Toledo (633). His feast day is April 4.
It is a beautiful area, with views of Whale Peak to the south extending all the way to the Mexican border from the summit. On our return we will take a short detour to visit the quaint town of Julian for their famous apple pie.
Totals for the day will be 7.6 miles and 2800 ft gain. Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch and other essentials. Moderate pace. This is a Sierra Club Backcountry Outing, which requires everyone to submit a completed Medical Form to the Leader at the trailhead.
