Join us for a moderately difficult 8-mile hike in Topanga State Park featuring two large rock formations that rise impressively over Topanga State Park. We will begin in the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park and hike along the pleasant Temescal Fire Road for a couple of miles to Hub Junction, where several trails converge and there is a small pavilion with benches and informational signs about the park and mountains. A pit toilet is also available there. We will take a quick break at Hub Junction before moving on to Cathedral Rocks just a short distance away. After spending a little bit at Cathedral Rocks, we will head back on fire trails for about a mile to Eagle Rock, the second featured rock formation on our hike. We will have a snack at Eagle Rock and descend on the single track Garapito Canyon Trail where sycamores and other trees and bushes will provide a generous canopy for most of the 2.3 miles we will spend on that trail. There will be a short ascent out of the canyon back up to the Temescal Fire Road which we will rejoin and follow back to the trailhead where we began. Our total elevation gain will be approximately 1,350 feet.
Meet at 8:00 am sharp at the trailhead at the top of the parking lot at the end of Reseda Boulevard in Mulholland Gateway Park. (3600 Reseda Blvd., Tarzana, CA 91366). Parking is $5 in the fee area, or park for free a short walk below before the fee area begins. Our hike should take approximately 5 hours. Bring about two liters of water, snacks, appropriate layers and sturdy shoes with a good tread. No dogs, alas, per park rules. Rain or any wildfires in the area cancel. Restrooms available at the trailhead and an outhouse at Hub Junction.
Level: Moderate
Bring: Water, snacks, shoes with good treads.
Additional Directions: The trailhead is at the top of the parking lot at the very end of Reseda Boulevard.
