Interested in doing some off-trail exploring, or maybe you would like to sharpen your skills with a map and compass? Sierra Club is here to provide you with the foundation to explore outdoor spaces with confidence. This class is designed to provide you with the skills to help you:
- Understand and read a Topographical Map
- Discuss and learn the parts of a compass
- Using Map and Field bearings to find your way around
- Tools to find your location on a map
- What is declination?
- Integrating technology to find your way
This course is a combination of classroom and field work, so comfortable clothing and footwear is essential to your day. Snacks and hydration highly recommended! We will provide maps and compass for use. Please feel free to bring your own compass if you own one.
This course is classified as MODERATE with paved and unpaved trails and backcountry hiking. This course will be cancelled/rescheduled in the event of thunderstorms or severe weather.
Fees: FREEAfton State Park requires a state park pass - If you need assistance with the cost of a day park pass, please contact JR Hunte at contact info below.
THIS CLASS IS LIMITED TO 12 SPOTS - Please register ASAP if interested.
Any specific gear or food/water needs, or prerequisites for participants (such as experience, conditioning, and gear): Please wear comfortable shoes, water bottle, note-taking materials, and dress for being outdoors. We will be indoors for the first half of the class, so please feel free to wear a mask if you choose.
