Join us for a spring hike to and through the beautiful Malibu Creek State Park! This moderately paced 7 mile, 500 ft gain out-and-back hike starts at the Tapia Spur Trail parking area of Malibu Creek State Park (just south of the main entrance). The hike starts on a rambling road through the shady oaks Tapia Park Public Use area which takes us to a single track trail that winds up the ridge through the Santa Monica Mountains for about 1.5 miles east toward the main Park. We'll drop back down into Malibu Creek through the group camping to a road to the main Malibu Creek trailhead. Restrooms are available at this point, before moving on. For the next 2 miles, we'll follow along Malibu Creek, visiting Rock Pool, a popular rock-climbing venue, and continuing on to Century Lake where we'll break for a snack and then return back the same route. Malibu State Park was home to 20th Century Fox movie sets, including Planet of the Apes and M.A.S.H. series. Due to winter rains, the bridge that leads to the historic M.A.S.H. site is temporarily removed for safety, but restored in Spring. The park area encompasses Las Virgenes Valley, Liberty Canyon, Kaslow Nature Preserve, Tapia Park and Udell George Nature Preserve. There is an abundance of cormorants, starlings, and other wildlife in the area. Bring at least two liters of water, snacks, hiking boots, poles if you use them, hat, sunscreen. This is a “front country” event and will take about 3.5 hours. Rain / showers / wildfires will cancel. For questions, contact Heidi Lennartz, 818-519-0117 or heidilennartz@gmail.com
Directions: From Malibu/PCH, take Malibu Canyon (Las Virgenes Canyon) north about 4.5 miles to Tapia Entrance of Malibu State Park, turn into Tapia Park, left on Dorothy Drive.
