Dr. Shelby Thomas, PhD is CEO & Founder of Ocean Rescue Alliance International | 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project.
Dr. Thomas's topic is Art for impact and restoration (becoming a guardian of the reef)
She is the visionary CEO and founder of Ocean Rescue Alliance International (ORAI), a nonprofit dedicated to marine conservation and habitat restoration. With a PhD in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from the University of Florida. Shelby specializes in innovative solutions for ocean restoration, including artificial reefs and coastal resilience projects. She has spearheaded numerous large-scale efforts, such as a groundbreaking projects deploying over 300 artificial reefs, providing infrastructure to outplant over 30,000 corals, integrating environmental protection with community engagement and ecotourism. Shelby’s work blends science, art, and sustainability to inspire ocean stewardship and protect marine ecosystems for future generations.
At the Ocean Rescue Alliance International (ORAI) it is our mission to connect people to the ocean, enable opportunities to make direct action in marine restoration and create truly regenerative solutions that can sustain marine ecosystems for generations to come. We do this through novel innovative projects that combine science and art for connection, restore local marine species with adaptive solutions, and build marine infrastructure to create habitat and provide coastal protection. Each project creating an opportunity to connect, restore, support and serve communities but more importantly the environment in a sustainable regenerative way.
