SAT, APR. 26 "FIRE AND WATER"

We'll be exploring the South Fork area of the Lincoln National Forest in theSmokey Bear Ranger District within the proximity of the South Fork Campground(closed) and the South Fork Trail #19 which is within the Little Bear Fire scar from2012. We'll also look and discuss the Federal seasonal Public water system of thecampground and its requirements of the EPA Federal Safe Drinking Water Act.Along Trail #19 we'll discuss the original Bonito pipeline history which is on theNational Register of Historic Sites. We'll hike to the White Mountain Wildernessboundary which skirts the Rio Bonito along the way with several stream crossings.We'll visit Bonito Lake via the abandoned West Lake Campground owned by theCity of Alamogordo and currently managed by the New Mexico Game and FishOPEN GATE Program. We'll be doing some short off trail hiking so sturdy bootsand hiking poles are strongly recommended. This will be an all day event, so bringlunch/snack/water and there are picnic tables (Restroom facilities might not beavailable/open) at the campground. Please dress accordingly to the weather.Elevation is a moderate 250' with approximately 4.5 miles of hiking with severalstops as needed.No dogs please and appropriate for participants 18 years and older. Registration islimited to 6 participants.
