Join us for a moderately difficult 8-miler above La Cañada in the front country of the Angeles National Forest. This hike is for those of us who like wide-open, expansive vistas. Since we will be on wide fire trails, we will be able to fully enjoy those vistas, as we will not have to worry too much about looking down at our footing. There will be fresh views the entire hike, as it ends at a different trailhead from where we begin, with a car shuttle in between.
We will begin our hike at the Angeles Forest Fire Station where we will wind our way up Mt. Lukens Road through a few shady sections to the exposed ridge rising above Los Angeles. We will have spectacular views on both sides, with the city on our left and the San Gabriel Mountains on our right. We will ascend for about four and a half miles and then branch off onto Grizzly Flat Road, where we will slowly descend while we enjoy more views of the mountains to our northwest. Eventually, we will get to Hoyt Mountain Road and reach a pleasant saddle before we head down to the Grizzly Flats Trailhead. Total gain will be approximately 1,700 feet, with the descent about 1,000 feet.
Meet at 8:00 am sharp at the rideshare meeting point along the 2 in La Cañada, where we will coordinate our car shuttle between the trailheads. The rideshare meeting point is at the intersection of Angeles Crest and Chehalem Road on the long, wide, straight uphill section of the Angeles Crest Highway just to the north of the 210. The hike itself should take approximately 4-5 hours, but plan on an additional hour for car-shuttling and getting to and from the trailhead. Bring about two liters of water, snacks, appropriate layers and sturdy shoes with a good tread. Well-behaved dogs are allowed on-leash. Rain, snow or wildfires cancel. There are no restrooms on this hike.
This is a back country hike, which requires a completed and signed medical form. Help save time by going to this link, printing out the form and filling it out ahead of time: Medical Form.
All participants in Sierra Club activities are also required to sign a standard Participation Agreement. If you would like to read the Participation Agreement in advance, you can find it here.
