We achieved major wins in 2024. The work done by Sierra Club staff and volunteers was crucial in getting critical environmental legislation passed. In 2025, we are building on the progress we've made and continue fighting to protect Michigan's air, water, soil and citizens.

On May 15, join us for our annual lobby day at the Capitol. You will have the chance to meet with your lawmakers and urge them to support pro environment legislation.

What we're advocating for:
Community Solar -
Michigan families deserve the freedom to choose clean, affordable energy, and community solar makes that possible. Unfortunately, the lack of any legislation allowing it has given utility companies exclusive control over community solar projects, blocking local communities from creating their own renewable energy solutions. This is wrong.

Michigan residents have some of the highest electricity costs in the Midwest.  Enabling community solar in Michigan would be a game-changer for the average Michigander who wants access to clean and affordable renewable energy. It would allow residents, regardless of homeownership, rooftop space, or those who are unable to afford rooftop solar, to participate and receive direct savings on their electricity bill. Community solar provides lower electric bills, clean energy, local jobs, long-term revenue opportunities, ownership for local communities, and a more resilient energy grid.

Protecting The Great Lakes From Microplastics - Michigan’s $22.8 billion tourism and outdoor recreation industry is at risk due to rising plastic pollution in the Great Lakes, our rivers, and streams. Over 22 million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes annually, breaking down into harmful microplastics that threaten human, animal, and ecosystem health.

Microplastics have been found at alarming levels in every Great Lake. They’ve also been found in fish, drinking water, bottled water, beer, and even in the air we breathe, making their way into our bodies. To protect human health, the environment, and vital freshwater resources, we must act now.

Sierra Club Michigan Lobby Days are open to everyone, and breakfast and lunch are provided. Your donation of $5 or more helps offset the event costs and provide funding for ongoing legislative work. If the cost is prohibitive please use the code "grassroots" to waive the fee. We also provide comprehensive training and resources to ensure you feel confident and ready to advocate for our issues! More information on our topics and training sessions coming soon! Visit our Legislative Action Center for updates and to see what we're working on.
