Moderate difficulty; 13 miles/2400’ gain for the trip. Join us for this weekend outing into the Eagle Mountains before the desert gets too hot! The Eagle Mountains mark the transition between Colorado Desert and higher-elevation Mojave Desert ecological zones. Desert saltbush, creosote bush, and cholla cactus of the low-elevation Colorado Desert give way to uniquely beautiful Joshua Trees as we hike to the peak of Eagle Mountain. Saturday we’ll get an early afternoon start from Cottonwood Springs 3.5 mi, 800' gain across sand to the base of the Eagle Mountains and set up camp. Early Sunday we’ll travel 2.5 mi/1700' gain to the summit. After taking in the fantastic views from the top we’ll return to camp, pack up and return to our cars. Our route will be entirely cross-country with some steep, sandy, and rocky sections along the way. Camp is dry, 6-8 liters of water recommended. Priority given to WTC students who need their first experience trip. To request a spot, send email with hiking resume to Guy Burnett. That1guy626@yahoo.com
