Broward Sierra Club Camping TripFriday May 30th to Sunday June 1st 2025 Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State ParkKissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park near Okeechobee makes up the largest remaining tract of Florida dry prairie, a unique ecosystem shaped by cycles of flooding and fire. Its designation as a Dark Sky Park offers exceptional stargazing opportunities, and extensive trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Being more than 54,000 acres, it is our state's 2nd biggest state park.We will meet at the Equestrian Camping Area on Friday, May 30th at 4PM to set up camp. There are two tents allowed per campsite, and we have several campsites reserved.
Location: 33104 NW 192nd Ave, Okeechobee, FL 34972 Phone: (863) 462-5360FRIDAY, MAY 30THWe can take a hike on Friday afternoon in the park if time permits, then we will have dinner around the campfire. (Bring your own Friday night dinner.) We will have a kitchen and eating area on the campsite. That is where we will all meet for meals. When the sun sets, we will enjoy the evening with some stargazing while hoping for a clear, dark sky that may allow us to see the Milky Way. We will also be going on an optional 2 mile night hike to experience these woods through a nocturnal lens!SATURDAY, MAY 31STOn Saturday morning we will have breakfast, pack our lunches, and we will go on a moderate, 6-hour hike led by our Outings Leader Jordan. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer, bald eagles, alligators, striped skunks, bobcats, coyotes, and if we're lucky, Florida panthers and black bears. Please be sure to bring a minimum of 80 ounces of water on our outings. You will have to carry your own water and it's a good idea to wear a backpack to carry the water. Dinner will be provided by the Sierra Club.
