What to expect:  Walk with escort Ms. Eliza Dolin, around the State Park, and learn about the history and natural vegetation of the area.  This will be a 60-75 minute moderate walk to Sugar Loaf Dune, with few stops and a side trip to the Marsh Overlook.   Each attendee must sign up on their own.

The trail to Sugarloaf Dune parallels the course of the lower Cape Fear River as it wends its way toward the sea, just south of Snow’s Cut where it connects the river and Masonboro Sound, part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Hikers pass several types of habitat along the way, including a beach, a marsh, and pocosins. Standing at 50 feet, the dune itself offers a unique perspective on the river and far shore, glimpsed through elegantly curved trees and shrubs. In recorded history it has served as a navigation landmark, soldiers’ encampment, and steamboat landing, but the Cape Fear Indians and their predecessors made the area their home for centuries before Europeans established a settlement in the early 18th century.

Walk conditions include:   Somewhat steep assent to the top of Sugarloaf Dune with no railings.  There are exposed roots, loose sand, and possibly black flies, ticks and gnats.  The trails could be flooded after a heavy rain.
