The Effects of Climate Change on Birds by Shawn H. Smith

While there is considerable research indicating climate change is impacting birds around the world, the reasons for it vary by location and results are not always consistent. For example, while extreme weather may result in mass mortality events, warmer winters may provide more access to resources and longer breeding seasons. During the presentation, I will discuss the effects climate change may or may not have on bird species in the tropics, the western United States, and northern Virginia.

Shawn Smith is a PhD Candidate at George Mason University. He earned a B.S in Wildlife Sciences from Auburn University, and a M.S. in Raptor Biology from Boise State University. He has been researching birds for over 15 years, exploring topics such as feather coloration, nesting phenology, window strike fatalities, singing behavior, and population dynamics. His primary focus is on understanding the impacts humans are having on birds. He is currently researching the effects of climate change on the survival of birds in central California.
