Rally for Clean Air! Tell SCAQMD Southern California Deserves Clean Buildings

Right now, we have an opportunity to act. The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), which oversees air quality standards for 17 million people across Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties, is set to vote on two groundbreaking rules.

Once again, Los Angeles-Long Beach has been ranked the smoggiest city in the nation by the American Lung Association. Air pollution in Southern California is a public health crisis that claims thousands of lives every year, causing countless hospital visits, missed school days, and asthma attacks. The communities of color in our region suffer the worst impacts.

While families struggle to breathe, polluters and their corporate allies are working around the clock to block common-sense clean air rules: flooding our communities with misinformation and desperately fighting to stop the next big step toward cleaner air. We can't let them win.

This June 6th, we're taking our message directly to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) headquarters. After months of industry-driven delays, we finally have our chance. The board is set to vote on critical standards for furnaces and water heaters that could improve air quality for the 17 million people living across Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties.

Rules 1111 and 1121 would cut lung-damaging smog by requiring appliance manufacturers to gradually sell more zero-emission heating technologies like electric heat pumps. These rules tackle pollution right where we live—our homes—while boosting access to efficient cooling.

We'll also use this opportunity to demand an end to the endless delays on Rule 2304—the Port Indirect Source Rule. This critical rule would finally hold the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach accountable for driving some of our worst air pollution. For too long, portside communities have endured toxic exposure from diesel trucks, ships, and cargo equipment while the shipping industry stalls meaningful action.

Join us at SCAQMD headquarters at 8:00 AM. We'll walk the “astroturf red carpet” to expose industry front groups and cheer during the “golden smokestack awards” ceremony. But most importantly, we'll show board members that real residents demand clean air protections over industry profits.

Your presence matters. Board members need to see faces, not just hear from lobbyists. Every person who shows up sends a powerful message that our communities won't stay silent.

Can't make it? Please take a moment to send comments directly to board members, demanding they vote YES on the healthy air standards for furnaces and water heaters.
