Sept 14 -  Monthly Meeting: Making Meals with the Planet in Mind

Miami Vegan: Plant-Based Recipes from the Tropics to Your Table.
It’s easy for anyone paying attention to the news to get discouraged, especially when we witness the destruction of the ecosystem that we feel compelled to protect. It can feel overwhelming – what can we do to help? When we look at our personal carbon footprint, how can we walk more gently on the plant and minimize our carbon footprint? Besides giving up your car or your air conditioner, changing your food choices can have a dramatic impact on our use of resources. One pound of beef requires 12 pounds of grain, 55 sq. ft. of rainforest, and 2,500 gallons of water! One of the reasons that our monthly meetings begin with a vegan potluck is to share a low impact meal to ‘walk the talk’. Looking for ideas on how to add more plant-based meals to your diet? Then, you don’t want to miss this month’s speaker.

Ellen Kanner is the author of Miami Vegan: Plant-Based Recipes from the Tropics to Your Table and the award-winning book Feeding the Hungry Ghost: Life, Faith and What to Eat for Dinner. She writes about the intersection of food, culture, community, wellness, and sustainability for outlets including HuffPost, VegNews, and Edible South Florida. She’s a vegan advocate and culinary instructor, recipe developer for major brands, and the creator of the Substack newsletter Broccoli Rising https://ellenkanner.substack.com/. A fifth generation Miami native, she lives with her husband in — where else? — Miami.

This meeting will also be our social time together, so we ask those who want to participate to bring a plant-based dish to share with others for dinner before the meeting begins. Vegan meals provide the least impact to the planet while sharing food that we all have in common - food that comes from the earth.
The Pot-Luck meal will begin at 5 pm, and the meeting will start at 6 pm, at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3011 Columbus Blvd, Coral Gables, in the Fellowship Hall (west entrance).
