Join Sierra Club for a self-guided / crowd-sourced tide pooling experience at a park you've probably never heard of: Jack Block Park. Formerly a toxic industrial site, we'll be exploring the resiliency of nature while celebrating the resiliency of human nature! This Tide with Pride outing is a warm environment for people of LGBTQ+ identity, but *all* people are invited to join.

Travel. By bike, bus (DART 773 stops at Harbor Ave SW & 2100 Block), water taxi, or carpool

Dress for success. Rain boots or closed-toed sturdy sandals will make exploring our rocky beaches and slippery seaweed more comfortable. Don’t forget sunscreen and water. Keep a change of clothes, a towel, and some hand sanitizer in the car to clean up afterward.

Love our sea life with care. Like an egg, tidepool creatures are tough but fragile. Use one or two wet fingers to gently touch anything you spot. If you pick up a rock to look underneath, replace it gently. Avoid detaching creatures from their homes as it could permanently damage or kill them. Walk carefully to avoid crushing anyone hiding in the eel grass or sand.

Identification, please. Wondering what that red squishy creature hanging from a rock is (hint: it might be a mottled or painted anemone)? Although local organizations like the Seattle Aquarium often hosts guides, and there are several much more comprehensive guides online (like this Puget Sound Beach Guide), you can also use an app like iNaturalist to snap a picture for identification help (iPhone owners may be able to ask Siri).

Level: Easy

Cost: FREE

Bring: Rain boots or beach shoes for slippery surfaces, water, sunscreen, a change of clothes, towel, hand sanitizer.
