Hike the Rip Rap Trail in Shenandoah NP

Hike approximately 8 miles on the Appalachian and Rip Rap Trails from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. This hike features spectacular views, a pleasant waterfall, and a swimming hole.

This hike will start on the Appalachian Trail, and then turn downhill along the Rip Rap Trail. We will pass Chimney Rocks and go down to one of the many pools along Rip Rap Creek. Weather permitting, we can stop for wading or swimming before heading back up the mountain.

Total distance will be about 8 miles, with an elevation change of about 1200 feet. Participants should be in good shape for long distance, uphill trekking.

Level: Strenuous

Cost: Shenandoah National Park charges an entrance fee. See https://www.nps.gov/shen/ for more information.

Bring: Bring water, a snack, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, sun protection, and a rain jacket just in case. If you'd like to jump in the wading pool, wear something that will dry quickly.

Signup Restrictions: All participants are required to complete a Medical Form in advance and to sign a Sierra Club waiver of liability form. No pets are allowed. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Additional Directions: Meet at the Chimney Rocks Overview / Rip Rap Trailhead on Skyline Drive, near mile marker 90.

Carpool: From Harrisonburg: meet at the Friendly City Food Coop at 8:15. From Richmond: meet at the Gaskins Road Park and Ride commuter lot at 7:30.

Note: Carpool transportation is at the sole risk of the participants.
