Pomponio Canyon Trail
➤ Hike Description: Join the Sierra Club San Mateo Hiking Group for a 6.6-mile figure-eight loop with an elevation gain of 1,230 feet. Explore a habitat for the endangered San Francisco garter snake amidst second-growth and old-growth redwoods. Wind through lush redwood groves, listen to serene creek valleys, and climb to panoramic mountain viewpoints where you can spot distant ridges. Memorial Park, established in 1924 to honor San Mateo County residents who lost their lives in World War I, was a foundational step in forming the San Mateo County Parks Department. Prior to its preservation, this area was part of a vast redwood forest threatened by logging, saved by local conservation efforts that left a lasting legacy. The park also serves as a critical water source for local wildlife.
➤ Post-Hike Celebration: In keeping with the spirit of Memorial Park, we invite you to join us after the hike for a festive tailgate potluck gathering at the picnic area adjacent to the parking lot. Come trade trail stories, and good company around the majestic redwoods.
