Our three Sierra Club Groups, Loxahatchee, Miami and Broward will have a panel Q&A and discussion on What do we do with our Trash, moderated by WPLG journalist Louis Aguirre. Our panel guests are Mayor Beam Furr, Marcello Balladares, Dr. Philip Stoddard, Richard Ramcharitar and Anagha Iyer.

Louis Aguirre, Moderator - WPLG Local 10’s Environmental Advocate. His signature campaign, Don’t Trash Our Treasure, has become a cornerstone of environmental awareness in South Florida. This weekly investigative series highlights pressing issues such as plastic pollution, habitat loss, water quality degradation, and the urgent need for conservation. Under his leadership, the campaign has been nominated for fourteen Emmy awards and earned six for environmental reporting. His primetime series Saving Biscayne Bay exemplifies Aguirre’s commitment to elevating science-driven reporting. The series explored the alarming decline of seagrass, fish die-offs, and the consequences of stormwater pollution, linking these challenges to larger ecosystem failures in the Everglades and coastal regions. Beyond the screen, Mr. Aguirre hosted community town halls and moderated expert panels, helping bridge the gap between science, policy, and the public.

Panel:
Mayor Beam Furr – Mr. Furr currently serves as Mayor of the Broward County Commission. He is a Broward County Commissioner representing District Six, the southeast part of the county.  He was first elected to the Broward County Commission in 2014. Prior to that, he was a Hollywood City Commissioner for 12 years. As an elected official, he has focused on environmental issues, early childhood education, transportation, housing, economic opportunity, and the arts. Mayor Furr serves as chair of the Southeast Florida Transportation Council, the co-chair of the Broward Climate Change Task Force, Broward County Solid Waste Authority, as well as a board member of the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), CareerSource Broward, the Broward County Tourist Development Council (TDC), and South Florida Regional Planning Council. Beam also served as a board member of the Broward County Children’s Services Council for 9 years


Richard Ramcharitar - Executive Director of Broward Clean Air and a Broward Sierra Group member. He also is a team member of Abbe Associates under WSP. He works on parts of the Zero Waste Master Plan for Miami-Dade County (MDC ZWMP), which also involves evaluating a closed loop solid waste system for Miami International Airport. Broward Clean Air was the main local partner and co-host of the Zero Waste Week Global Zero Waste Forum this past spring.

Dr. Philip Stoddard - Professor of biology at Florida International University 1992-2024 and Mayor of South Miami from 2010-2020. Mayor Stoddard was appointed by the White House to the Governance Coordinating Committee of the National Ocean Council where he developed national policy for sea level rise. Mayor Stoddard was named by Politico Magazine to the Politico-50 “guide to the thinkers, doers and visionaries transforming American politics in 2016” for his frank explanations of sea level rise. The Sierra Club of Florida gave him their “Osprey Award”. Dr. Stoddard assists FIU with sustainability initiatives, and the City of South Miami as
the Special Envoy for Climate and Sustainability.

Anagha Iyer - A high school senior, the BSG Junior Team Chair, and a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability. She has actively worked to raise awareness about critical issues like waste management and climate change. She recently spoke at a press conference about how landfills and incineration—two practices that, though different in method, share the same harmful impacts—pose serious threats to future generations. Anagha’s commitment to advocacy also extends to her writing; she has authored several letters to the editor on environmental topics that have been published in outlets such as the Miami Herald and the Sun Sentinel. Through her leadership and voice, she strives to inspire others to take meaningful action for a more sustainable future.

Marcello Balladares - Prior to joining the Sierra Club, he organized for climate and environmental justice with the youth-led Sunrise Movement in Miami and advocated for the protection of our state and national parks with members of his community in Miami-Dade,
Tallahassee and D.C. Marcelo has helped lead Sierra Club's "Don't Incinerate, Innovate!" campaign in Miami Dade, calling on the county to end the harmful practice of waste incineration in Miami-Dade and support zero waste efforts throughout Miami.
