The Trump administration is actively working to dismantle Arizona's Newest national monument- Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni- in order to open it up to Uranium Mining (the very reason it was designated in the first place). Join us for a weekend to connect with and learn more about why Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni is so important, the threats it faces, and what you can do to get involved in defending this sacred and critically important land. We will be spending time in the Northern parts of the monument, as these sections are of highest priority for the Trump administration to dismantle.
Participants will meet on Friday by 5 pm at our group campsite. We will conclude as a group on Sunday late morning.
We will begin the weekend on Saturday by attending the annual Endangered California Condor release at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. There, we will chat about the importance of the region to endangered species and what threats they face. We will then take time to explore a part of the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in the world, protected by Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni National Monument, and other protective land management designations. We will end the day at a beautiful overlook, overlooking the Northern parts of the Monument. There, we will discuss the threats to the region posed by uranium mining. Small hikes will be worked into the schedule as time and interest allows.
med/high clearance will be necessary to access the camping location on this trip. Carpooling may be available.
Participants are in charge of their own food, water, and camping supplies for the trip. Snacks will be available. If support is needed for any camping supplies, we may be able to support rentals. Just reach out.
