I: Mount Harwood (9552'), Mount Baldy (10,064') - Savor the splendor of our beautiful Angeles National Forest as we ascend the high point of LA County, the magnificent Mount San Antonio (also known as Mount Baldy). Starting from the ski lift lot, we'll climb to the cool heights of the Notch, travel the Devils Backbone Trail, and tag Mount Harwood, all the while reveling in the views - - to the north, the distant high desert; around us, steep rugged canyons shouldering marvelous mountains (Baden-Powell, Ross, Iron, Pine, Dawson, Telegraph, Thunder, Cucamonga, Ontario, and more). With some narrow trail and gravely terrain, this 10-mile 3900' gain hike is for the well-conditioned experienced hiker. Or, opt to ride the ski lift and meet us at the Notch; from there, hike totals are only 5.4 miles 2460' gain. Hike-experienced dogs with well-behaved owners welcome. Please bring liquids, lugsoles, layers, lunch and hat. [Classified a Sierra Club backcountry outing, it requires a completed medical form hard copy be presented to leader at trailhead prior to hike.] Contact peterdoggett@aol.com for trip details.
