View of the Palouse area from Moscow Mountain

Join the Palouse Group of the Sierra Club and Friends of the Clearwater on July 19th for a hike in the Warnick Road area on Moscow Mountain!

We’ll meet at the Moscow Safeway parking lot at 10:00 am, then caravan to the Warnick Rd parking area. This hike will be on MAMBA trails in the Warnick Road area and will include portions of the Cabin Trail and lower parts of LaFortune’s Flight.

We'll stop for lunch on the trail (on us! Pick out your sandwich from STAX here), and while we eat, we'll discuss local environmental issues affecting our region. About half of the hike is beside a beautiful creek and involves some steep sections, but we’ll make plenty of stops for rests, water, and snacks.

After lunch, we'll continue along the trails, and near our intersection with Lafortune's Flight, folks will have the option to split into two groups -- either heading back to the parking area or extending the hike by continuing farther up LaFortune’s Flight before returning.

What to expect
10:00 | Meet at Moscow Safeway parking lot (1320 S Blaine St, Moscow, ID 83843), sign in
10:30 | Drive to Warnick Rd parking area. NOTE: Google Maps has errors just after the Warnick Rd parking area.
10:50 | Arrive at the trailhead
11:10 | Welcome, introductions, review of event safety and expectations
11:20 | Begin hike
12:00 - 12:30 | Lunch
1:15 | More hiking, option to split into two groups
2:00 | (Early return group) Arrive back at trailhead, sign out
3:00 - 3:30 | (Longer hike group) Arrive back at trailhead, sign out
Depending on the group, you can expect to return to Moscow between 2:30 - 4:00pm

What to pack
Make sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and weather appropriate clothing. Pack at least a quart of water, sunscreen, and any extra snacks you might want to eat on the trails.

Trail information
The route forms a rough loop using a combination of trails and forest roads, totaling around 2 miles—not including any optional extensions up LaFortune’s Flight. Most of the hike is shaded, and the elevation gain will be about 500 feet. Here’s the planned route:

  • We'll start at the Warnick Road parking area and walk a short distance back down the road to reach the Cabin Trailhead.

  • The Cabin Trail climbs about 200 feet over a half mile of trail along Twin Creek and brings us to a junction just above the old cabin site.

  • From there, we’ll take the PLT to Cabin Double Track connector.

  • At this point, we’ll reach LaFortune’s Flight, where the group will decide how far to continue up the trail. Depending on interest and energy levels, we may split into two groups:

    • One group may continue farther up LaFortune’s Flight for a longer and more challenging hike before turning around and heading back.

    • The other group can head back down via the lower section of LaFortune’s Flight, which follows the other side of the creek for about 2/3 of a mile back to the Warnick Road parking area.

Food
Lunch is on us! Click here to choose a sandwich option from STAX restaurant in Moscow.

Interested in carpooling with other participants?
Feel free to offer up your car or self-assign yourself to ride in someone else’s car (use this link). Note that carpool transportation is at the sole risk of the participants, both driver and passengers. Personal driver auto insurance is always primary in the event of an accident. There is no Sierra Club auto insurance to cover vehicle drivers or participants.

Transportation
After meeting at the Safeway parking lot, there will be the option for folks to carpool with others if they'd like. From the parking lot, the drive will take about 20 minutes to the trailhead.

Because you may lose cell service prior to reaching the parking area, we recommend printing the directions (PDF here) or starting/downloading the Google Maps directions before leaving the Safeway parking lot. Since the route is not clearly marked and Google Maps has errors just after the Warnick Rd parking area, we will all leave the Safeway parking lot at the same time in order to caravan.

Other considerations
Kids, families, & dogs that can be kept under control are welcome! All minors MUST be accompanied by a guardian.

Please fill out a separate registration form for each person, so we can have a signed waiver on file for each person.

For more information or questions as we get closer to the date, go to “Palouse Group of the Sierra Club” on Facebook, or check with Mac Cantrell (macantr18@gmail.com).
