Hike Skyline Ridge Open Space - Alpine Pond, Horseshoe Lake Loop

MEET: 10:00am at Russian Ridge Preserve parking lot. 3901 Alpine Road, La Honda ( at Skyline Blvd Route35 / Alpine Road intersection). There are 2 vault restrooms , no internet. We will have 3 restroom stops; at the beginning of the hike, after lunch, and at the end. We will skip restroom stops 2 , 4, and 5. CARPOOL: 09:15am Pioneer Hotel in Woodside on Woodside road. Leader will not be there. DIRECTIONS: From the south; Hwy 280 to Woodside road exit, make a left to go west several miles to Skyline 35, then make a left onto Skyline 35. Go 7.2miles, look for a small brown sign saying Portola Redwoods. Make an immediate right after the brown sign onto Alpine Road and another immediate right into the Russian Ridge parking lot.From the north; Hwy 280 to Route 92 west, left turn onto Skyline 35. Drive 12.5miles. Pass Woodside Road. Drive another 7.2mi, then look for a small brown sign that says Portola Redwoods . Make an immediate right after the brown sign onto Alpine Road and another immediate right into the Russian Ridge parking lot. HIKE DESCRIPTION: Elevation gain is 1001 ft, 5.7mi ,so it is a 1B category. This is a very beautiful hike mostly in the woods, moderately challenging with rolling hills. We will pass Alpine Pond, then a lookout point to see the Santa Cruz mountains on Ipiwa trail. We will loop around Horseshoe Lake , get on Fir Knoll trail which is a beautiful old fir wood forest, then get back on Horseshoe Lake trail, both upper and lower trails. Lunch at 2 large picnic tables in the woods overlooking Horseshoe Lake, then make a restroom stop and get on the Sunny Jim trail. There will be a short climb, then back through the tunnel to the parking lot.Trails: Ipiwa>Sunny Jim>Tree Farm>Horseshoe lower>Fir Knowl>Horseshoe upper>Sunny Jim>Alpine>Ipiwa.RAIN CANCELS HIKE.
