Be a Citizen Scientist and learn how to conduct Cone Crop Surveys. Explore the Will Abell Memorial Trail at Arrowhead Ridge on this 4 mile educational hike.

In California, the need for post-fire restoration grows with each passing wildfire season. As the available seed stock continues to burn and the scale of lands to be restored increases, collaborative work toward solutions has become more important than ever before. Addressing gaps in the reforestation pipeline is a critical part of this work.  One of those gaps is identifying potential Cone Crops, where pine cones can be selected, seeds extracted, and new seedlings growing in tree nurseries ready for reforestation.  This crucial gap can be filled by recreational hikers looking up at the trees and reporting through Survey123 when cones are present on trees.  This can be done on federal land, state land, conservation lands, and even private property(with permission). Learn how to:

  • Identify Trees
  • Identify Stands of trees with significant cones
  • Use ArcGIS Survey123 to report significant cone crops
