"A Year in the Life of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird: Everyone loves hummingbirds? These tiny birds with extraordinary superpowers lead fascinating lives. Join Melanie Furr, the "hummingbird whisperer," to learn about a year in the life of these remarkable birds, from courtship and nesting, to their incredible migration, to attracting them to your own backyard.
Melanie is a former high school English Teacher who realized her true calling for teaching people about birds and other wildlife while volunteering for AWARE Wildlife Center. During her 10 years with AWARE, she rehabilitated injured and orphaned wildlife and worked closely with AWARE’s non-releasable ambassador animals, providing enrichment and training for the animals as well as providing outreach programs for the public. She also served briefly as AWARE’s communications and social media coordinator. Her time at AWARE, combined with her teaching background and master’s degree from Agnes Scott College, helped prepare Melanie for her role as the first education director for Atlanta Audubon (now Birds Georgia). During her more than 11 years in that role, she created and expanded keystone education programs for both youth and adults, contributing to the organization’s tremendous statewide growth. For four years, she was also the custodian for Birds Georgia’s education ambassadors, three Ruby-throated Hummingbirds injured in window collisions.
An avid birder, Melanie launched her own small business in 2025, Feathers with Furr LLC, to offer bird outings, talks, and tours. She is a certified Master Naturalist and has served on the board of directors for the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia and on the advisory council for K-12 Education at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. She currently serves on the board of Wild Nest Bird Rehabilitation in Decatur. A recent “empty nester,” she has birded in all 159 counties in Georgia and can identify almost any southeastern bird by sight and sound. Her favorite bird is the American Crow.
