Northern KY Sierra Club's September general meeting will be a tour of the Campbell County Log Cabin History & Farm Heritage Museum in Grants Lick KY! We'll tour 2 relocated 19th century log cabins filled with local history, including a collection of farm artifacts dating between 1865 and 1965. Other exhibits include antique tractors, windmills, a working steam engine, a broom maker, a blacksmith shop, a ¼-scale covered bridge, beehives and horse-drawn equipment and carriages. The museum opened in 1983 and it’s located in a wooded area with a short nature trail that visits the woods, a pond and a large native plants garden. The property is next to Oakland Cemetery, founded in 1847, where Daniel Boone’s sister Mary Boone Bryan is buried. There's also a nearby site where Shawnees once camped.
The museum and trail are owned and maintained by a local Sierra Club member, Kenneth Reis, who will be our tour guide. He is very knowledgeable about local history, having been former president of the Campbell County Historical Society. Ken's house is also on the property. Ken also operates Grants Lick's Community Lending Library since there are no nearby Campbell County Library branches. The library kiosk is in the little parking lot next to the gas station on Kenton Station Rd near US-27. If you have books you are willing to donate, especially about history, fiction or cooking, Ken will accept them for the library collection!
This is probably our last outdoor meeting in 2025 and it starts at 6pm so we can finish by sunset which happens shortly after 7:30pm.
To get to the Museum, drive US-27 (Alexandria Pike) to Grants Lick in southern Campbell County. Exit west on KY-1936, Kenton Station Rd. Go straight onto Clay Ridge Rd at a stop-sign intersection where Kenton Station Rd (KY-1936) goes to the right. Climb the hill on Clay Ridge, passing Grants Lick Elementary School on the right. Pass Smith-Hiteman Rd on the right. Then look for parking on the right at the museum's sign or at the #890 mailbox. Parking is available at both locations and we’ll provide on-site guidance to get every vehicle parked.
