Dry Lake Backpack
Saturday October 11 - 9:30 AM
This is a strenuous 13 mile in-and-out round trip overnight backpack (6.5 mi each way) to Dry Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains. The trip starts at the South Fork Trailhead (elevation 6900) and climbs 2100 ft to Dry Lake (elevation 9000) where we will camp. An Adventure Pass or Senior National Park Pass is required to park at the trailhead. Lower part of the route goes through the 2015 Lake Fire burn area and provides an opportunity to observe how the forest is recovering. The route then goes through beautiful South Fork meadow with its rushing streams, and then up to Dry Lake. We will camp for one night at Dry Lake which has spectacular views of San Gorgonio and Jepson peaks. Return trip the next day follows the same route.
Bring: Sturdy boots. Standard backpack supplies for an overnight trip. Food for two lunches, one dinner and one breakfast. Water filter. Water bottles with about 3-4 liters total capacity. Reliable water is available at Southfork Meadow (about 2/3 of the way to Dry Lake). Lodgepole Spring is very close to the campsite, but as of now, it is uncertain if it is flowing. The trip leader will scout out the site earlier in the week of the outing to verify whether or not the spring is flowing. If it is flowing, you will only need enough water to sustain yourself for the trail on the hike up; if not, then we will have to fill our water bottles at Southfork Meadow to sustain us until we cross Junction Meadow again on the return trip. Campsite is at 9000 feet, so temperatures are likely to drop to near freezing overnight. Bring an appropriate sleeping bag. I will check weather forecast a few days before to find the predicted low temperature and any possibility of rain that would affect whether or not to bring a tent and rain gear. Backcountry trip medical forms required. LEADER: Greg Walker 951-276-1828, walker@citrus.ucr.edu. CO-LEADER; Dave Melton San Gorgonio Chapter.
