Let’s take an autumn hike on the Yellow and Red Trails in the South Unit of Bald Mountain State Recreation Area. We’ll start with the short Yellow Trail (0.8 miles each way) to access the Red Loop (~4.5 miles). Altogether, the hike totals 6.1 miles and will take about 2.5 to 3 hours, winding along marshes and deep forests, through rolling hills, and across rugged terrain. If you’re concerned about slipping on uneven ground or wet boardwalks, hiking poles can be very helpful. Occasionally, we may share the trail with a few mountain bikers.
Meeting Time and Location:
There is a parking lot (coordinates: 42.7486428, -83.2150666) that can accommodate about 4–5 vehicles. If this lot is full, you can park at the Shooting Range parking lot (coordinates: 42.7462019, -83.2193139). Park here and then WALK TO THE SMALLER PARKING LOT indicated above, where we’ll meet to start the hike. Please arrive by 9:45 AM so we can begin promptly at 10:00 AM. There are no restrooms at this trailhead. If needed, you will have to use the woods.
Hike Leader:
The hike’s leader is Sudha Ganesh. Please text or call 248-219-3243 with any questions.
Participation Details:
For all our hikes, please remember to bring comfortable hiking shoes, a water bottle, food, and the season’s weather appropriate clothing. Electronic copies of the required waiver are available online or by request and will be accepted automatically by signing-in to the event.
Cancellation Policy:
The hike will proceed rain, snow, or shine. However, if an Extreme Weather Warning is issued by the National Weather Service, the hike will be canceled for safety reasons.
Park Pass Information:
When visiting a Michigan State Park, a Recreation Passport is required. The cost per vehicle is $14 when purchased during license plate registration renewal through the Secretary of State. Entrance to Metroparks requires a $40 annual pass or a $10 day pass. You may be able to purchase a day or annual pass at the park entrance booth.
Hikes are free and open to the public. However, sometimes we do activities that require a fee which would be noted in the description of the event.
