Join us for a New Years Day hike at the Indiana Dunes. Feel the "cool" breeze on your face, breathe in the clean air, listen to the birds singing. Just enjoy being outside. Start out the New Year on the right foot! We will hike about 4 to 8 miles (depending on conditions) on mostly inland trails where it is more sheltered from the winter winds. We will stop briefly for a lunch break on the trail or between hikes. This is an important natural area and is known as the birthplace of ecology. The trip starts at the trail head at 11 AM Chicago time to give you a bit more time on New Year's morning. After the hike, we may stop for an early dinner at a local restaurant, and you are welcome to join us.Please note, the National Park Service now requires all visitors have a park pass, and while the visitor center will be closed on New Years Day, a short term one week pass that is linked to your car license plate can be purchased ahead of time online at https://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/fees.htmIf you have any questions, please email to the leader Bob Brubaker at nlubob@yahoo.com. Bob, has been a leader and guide for the Sierra Club for about 30 years, and has led hiking, biking, and canoe adventures. He welcomes people to ask questions and share their knowledge.

                        Cost: Donation $5.
Signup Instructions: To sign up, please fill out the sign-up form completely. After clicking the red button to sign the waiver, you will be taken to a different screen that after clicking that you have read and understand the risks etc, there is an option to sign the digital or paper waiver. Be sure to click the DIGITAL version, otherwise you will need to start all over again as the system does not allow you to edit it later on. NOTE: A separate sign up is needed for each person coming. Your name, phone, email address, and town may be listed in the trip letter. In the form is a question asking if you have any health issues that I should be aware of as the leader. This is to help make sure the outing is of the appropriate level for everyone, and to keep the trip running smoothly and safely. You are not registered until the leader has approved your sign up and sent you a personally written confirmation, not the auto reply letter.
Bring: A list of things to bring and where to meet will be included in the trip letter that is sent out about 1 week before the trip. One thing it will say is to dress in layers and come prepared so you don't get cold when sitting down outside for lunch... That would include things like hiking boots (no regular walking shoes), traction devices such as Stabilicers, long underwear, maybe wind/rain pants, a nice warm jacket, hat, mittens with hand warmers...
Cancellation Policy: Trips are generally held rain, snow, or shine, however they may be altered depending on forecasted conditions or cancelled if the weather or conditions is bad such as sleet.
