The Three Rivers Project of the Piasa Palisades Sierra Club Group (PPG) is planning a River Road cleanup on Saturday, November 15, 2025 from 9:30am-11:30am. The public is invited to help rid the environment of debris that harms physical habitats, threatens aquatic life, transports chemical pollutants to rivers, marine and coastal environments. Of all trash, plastic trash has the greatest potential to harm the environment, wildlife, and humans. The Mississippi River flows over 2,000 miles from its headwaters in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Items that we use every day - like disposable coffee cups, masks and plastic bags – can end up in the environment, making their way to our river.
“We are asking residents to join the Sierra Club to be a part of the solution to combat plastic pollution along the Mississippi River by helping to pick up litter in Alton, IL.,” said Christine Favilla, Three Rivers Project Coordinator for the Sierra Club. “Up to 80% of marine plastic originates on land, and rivers are a major route for plastic litter to be transported from inland communities to the ocean.”
