Coastal Virginia Sierra Club’s First Annual Yankee Swap / White Elephant
This winter we will be having our traditional pot luck on Tuesday, January 6. This day coincides with the Feast of the Epiphany, a day that has traditionally been celebrated with an exchange of gifts. As such, we are sponsoring our first annual Yankee Swap!
In case you are unfamiliar with this ritual, here’s how it works:
- Each participant brings a present, appropriately wrapped. It may be some curio or bric-a-brac, preferably a one-of-a-kind article of distinctive taste. Kitch is definitely in. These gifts should be priceless (though certainly under $10 retail or at a thrift store). Buying retail is frowned upon – just how likely is that to be unique? Rather, rummage through your attic, garage, or storage closet. Or you might decide to regift a recent Christmas present -we won’t tell.
- As you drop off your wrapped gifts, you will take a matching pair of tickets, keeping one half and putting the other half in the drawing bowl.
- These tickets will be drawn by our emcee. When your number comes up, you choose a present, unwrap it, cherish it, and flaunt it to the other participants. This present is yours – well, at least momentarily.
- You then decide whether to keep the gift, or to exchange it for one of the previously opened presents – no consent necessary.
- At the end, we will vote on the most distinctive gift. (Environmentally-friendly and nature-oriented gifts earn extra credit.) Its donor will then receive one of our new Sierra Club t-shirts!
