Trip cancelled due to impending storm over trip weekend
Location: Lake Helen, Lassen NP
Dates: Feb 14 - 16 (Saturday to Monday)
Here's your chance to spend President's Day Weekend around Lake Helen in Lassen National Park with a small group of snow campers (up to 10).
We'll meet Saturday morning at the Southern Entrance of Lassen NP at 9:30 am, packed and ready to hike. We'll hike from 6700 feet to ~8200 feet in roughly 4.5 miles. On Sunday, we'll hike up towards Lassen Peak or Bumpass Hell if it is safe or you may relax in camp. On Monday, we will leave after breakfast and tearing down our camp, returning to the parking lot early enough for the drive back to the Bay area.
We may need to choose a location other than Lake Helen if the long approach to Lake Helen is not safe. This will depend on weather and avalanche advisory. Same is true for the Sunday day hike. Sadly, the last two attempts to Lake Helen had to be scuttled. One of the trips was cancelled completely due to a significant storm and for the other we chose a shorter hike to Forrest Lake instead.
Lassen is a long drive from the Bay area, hence we highly recommend driving up on Friday with an overnight stay in Red Bluff.
From Red Bluff, you would take Hwy 36 East and then 89 N to reach the Lassen NP southern entrance station. Toilets and water are available at the
Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center, but there is no cell phone service. Food may be available if the concession stand is open inside the visitor center.
A winter entry fee of $10 or a National Parks pass is required to visit Lassen NP.
We will set up a google doc to assist in carpooling, sharing lodging and gear.
