Join us for a cultural + nature outing to Auburn/Opelika, Alabama. We will first view original John James Audubon hand-colored etchings of birds at Auburn University’s Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts.  J.J. Audubon was a 19th century ornithologist, naturalist and artist who created and produced the 3 volume Birds of America series that inspired many people to protect birds. Following this cultural immersion into bird art, we will head to the Opelika Wood Duck Preserve for an easy 2 mile walk. Highlights for this walk will be viewing various wintering ducks from 2 blinds overlooking a large pond. Your leader will provide a viewing scope for a closeup look. Current ducks being seen include ring-necked ducks, green-winged teals, buffleheads, lesser scaups as well as wood ducks, ruddy ducks, Northern shovelers, and Northern pintails.

Museum: Restrooms are available at the museum. The museum is free with donations welcome.

Lunch: We will dine at a reasonably priced food court in Auburn.

Hike: Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate shoes (boots or sneakers) for hike. This trail can have muddy spots. A restroom is available.

Bring water. Binoculars are recommended but not required.
