On Thursday, March 5th at 6 PM, on Zoom and in person, at The Multi-Purpose Room, James H. Gilliam, Jr., Building at 67 Reads Way, New Castle DE 19720, the New Castle County Board of Adjustments will discuss the Project Washington.

Let us know you're coming so we can share resources and updates.

We recommend everybody draft 1-3 minute-long comments about Project Washington and their attempts to stamp out community voices and jump past established processes. We will provide more concrete points for folks to riff off of if they would like to those who register. However, here are some primary points:
  • Project Washington was recently denied the ability to develop as proposed under the Coastal Zone Act. The project must be reworked and thus getting approval for a substation now isnt necessary until the project and its needs are reworked and refiled.
  • Project Washington needs to reapply to the County with an updated site plan to align with the DNREC decision.
  • The parcel is zoned Suburban, and any utility infrastucture needs to be for public use. This subsation would not be needed without this project and thus is not for public use.
  • The Project is seeking a rezoning and would not need a variance under that rezoning. As such, the Project is trying to get out ahead of the council's support of rezoning and game the system. They should have to wait until their rezoning is done before they build a substation that may not be needed at the scale proposed.
For any questions, comments, or concerns, please reach out to Marissa McClenton (marissa.mcclenton@sierraclub.org)

Bring: Prepare comments about Project Washington and why they should not be able to jump processes and get a special use permit for a substation for their project before rezoning or a new DNREC decision. Comments should be 1-3 minutes long. Be prepared for comments to be cut down to 1 minute.
