Saving Nature One Yard at a Time

During this Shawnee Group Sierra Club event, we will watch Doug Tallamy's Whats the Rush? a film focusing on why its important to create bee and insect friendly plantings essential for supporting birds and other wildlife. The film explores how our yards together can become part of the largest ever national park and a source of hope. Following the film, our panel will facilitate discussion of our questions and comments, such as on issues we may face when committing to bird and insect friendly landscaping. And folks attending will have time before and after the film and Q & A to enjoy refreshments and talk with the co-hosts at their tables about the resources and events their organizations offer. This event is free and open to the public! Refreshments will be served! And a drawing will be held for a copy of two recent books by Tallamy, a widely published entomologist, ecologist, and conservationist: How Can I Help? Saving Nature with Your Yard (2025) and Natures Best Hope: A New Approach to Conservation that Starts with Your Yard (2020). Event co-hosts tabling at this event include Faith in Place, Healing SoIL Farm, Keep Carbondale Beautiful, Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship, Green Earth, Women for Change Red Hen Garden, Southern Illinois Chapter of the Native Plant Society, Southern Illinois Audubon Society, Church of the Good Shepherd Green Team, Jackson County Health Department, and University of Illinois Extension.
